From the latin globus meaning sphere. Globes have a long history, the first mentioned is from Strabo describing the globe of Crates from about 150BC. The oldest surviving terrestrial globe is the Erdapel made by Martin Behaim in 1492. Globes are a representation of earth and symbolizes power. knowledge, vanity and the world of human achievements (Jera Rune). It was a clear glass vessel filled with a coloured liquid and displayed in an Apothecary’s shop window. The glass as a metaphor for barriers, confinement in relation to the natural world, representing the artificial environment (the illusion of reality) that restricts the natural growth and the freedom of the trees.
Used for a variety of purposes show globes of the Apothecary, light globes or bulbs, decorative snow globes and these here. Apothecaries in coastal regions used red and green liquids to show sailors where to find medical attention. This and other strategies were used by Apothecary’s ,alchemists, sorcerers, witches, practitioners of the natural arts as their existence was under threat of violence and death according to the witch craft act. This act in UK was removed in early 1950s, yet the hunt is still on for those who move contrary to what is considered normal, acceptable by other religious and sectarian, academic parties.
